The many times that the people of Canada nearly lost the Rideau Canal.

 1922 -

1960's - Dismantle the entire Rideau Canal and build a highway from the Capital to Kingston, Ontario.

March 25, 1970 - House of Commons Ottawa: Mr. Olio: "...Today we have the Trent Canal and the Rideau Canal system still under the jurisdiction of the federal government because it was originally a defence measure. Surely that is no longer so and it could easly be transferred to the provinces."

November 27, 1974 - The Glassco Commission recommended that the federal government sell the National Historic Site to the province or the city of Ottawa. It never happened.

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau:

  • refused to sell the Canadian National Railway hotels, including the Chateau Laurier, to the Hilton Corporation.
  • created Harbourfront to save 100 acres of waterfront land in Toronto.
  • established more National Parks.
  • refused to transfer 700 acres of Ottawa's Experimental Farm to a Crown corporation for housing.
House of Commons Ottawa March 15, 1972. The Hon. Martin O'Connell, Minister of Labour, Liberal: "In our government's four years in office our national parks have increased from 18 to 28...There is a 50 per cent increase in the area set aside in perpetuity for national parks. Canada leads all the nations in the world in land set aside for future generations."
