Sir John A. Macdonald was one of Canada's greatest Prime Ministers.

      The City of Kingston is now seeking public input on the legacy of Sir John A. Macdonald. I'll tell you what the legacy of Sir John A. Macdonald is, without Sir John A., Canada would not exist. He created the Canadian Pacific Railway to unite Canada, and to prevent the annexation of this land by the United States of America.
Sir John A. Macdonald was one of the  the greatest Prime Ministers of Canada.

 Do not try to erase the history of your great city, local politicians. I never want to see the desecration of Kingston, Ontario:
-when statues of political leaders are toppled and hidden away in warehouses;
-when street names are changed;
-when honourary plaques are removed from buildings;
-when even more historic buildings are removed from the federal inventory and transferred to the Canada Lands Company;
-when parks and schools are renamed.
-when tourism booklets are rewritten.
   Kingston, Ontario is one of my favourite cities, I love to visit places like Bellevue House and the Martello Towers and (Old) Fort Henry. My husband used to windsurf near Macdonald Memorial Park before he became blind. I have relatives who live in the city.
      Now I know why the Village of Portsmouth was never designated a Heritage Conservation District. You knew, well in advance, that federal buildings and Fisheries and Oceans Canada land would be privatized; and you wanted the Village to be transformed into another Hong Kong.

Heritage Conservation Districts in Kingston:
Barriefield Village
Market Square
Old Sydenham
The above mentioned districts are untouchable, they are permanently off the radar of real estate developers who build high rise condominiums.
     Now I know why the Village of Portsmouth was never designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In your zeal to create more housing, you are endorsing a scorched earth policy in regard to historic buildings. UNESCO is a United Nations agency that saves endangered landmarks and heritage sites.
UNESCO Sites in Kingston:
Kingston Mills
The Kingston Fortifications, including Fort Henry, Fort Frederick; and the Cathcart, Shoal and Murney Martello Towers.
-------------------------------------------------------
Martello Towers in Great Britain have been privatized and sold to real estate companies and The Condos of Fort York were constructed in Toronto.

The Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute is closing in the year 2019. I attended KCVI during the summer of 1967, because the town where I lived, Smiths Falls, did not have a summer school. I found out today that Sir John A. Macdonald, Don Cherry and members of the band Tragically Hip  attended KCVI.
