The Campanile Campus, Ottawa.

The Campanile Campus at 1495 Heron Road was also known as the Federal Study Centre. According to Heritage Ottawa:
"Designed by Ottawa architect Tim Murray, the sizable complex was comprised of twelve interconnected Pavilions arranged around a chapel and four small courtyards, each one devoted to the academic, the administrative, the novitiate and the monastic."
The Canadian government bought the former Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame campus  in 1973. (For more detailed information about the Campanile complex, read: "Church in Alta Vista now sits like a ghost town, its future uncertain" by Lisa Gregoire: Photography: Marc Fowler. Posted in ottawamagazine.com October 4, 2017.)

The word "campanile" is a medieval Latin word meaning "bell tower" or "belfry".

The former Summerhill Train Station tower is similar in design to the Campanile di San Marco bell tower in Venice, Italy. The real estate arm of the Canadian Pacific Railway wanted to demolish the Summerhill Train Station during the early 1970's. But nearby residents protested. See the book "Marlborough Marathon-One Street Against a Developer" by J.L. Granatstein.

The sale of Canadian Crown property.

The "various federal real estate holdings" included 100,000 acres of land and irreplaceable railway stations. At one point, plans were underway to demolish Ottawa's Union Station, now known as The Conference Centre.
A Privy Council Order-in-Council, approved by the Governor General of Canada, that resulted in the privatization of part of RCAF/CFB Downsview in Toronto, Ontario.

Ottawa's Experimental Farm - 1983.
Another Order-in-Council. This time, 91 acres of Experimental Farm land in Ottawa were sold in 1988. Federal Agriculture Ministers Bud Olson and Eugene Whelan resisted pressure from National Capital Commission Chairman Doug Fullerton to sell a large portion of the Farm to real estate entities, the Ministers said the Farm was "untouchable."

How disrespectful.

"New Canadians take citizenship oath on CN Tower Edgewalk."( CTV News)
A federal government building in Toronto should have been the venue where new Canadians swear their Oath of Allegiance to the Crown. Such as the majestic Dominion Public Building on Front Street. Oh, I forgot, the Dominion Public Building was sold a few months ago.
In Ottawa, new Canadians can take the Oath in a Government of Canada building---L'Esplanade Laurier or the C.D. Howe Building for example. People from other countries should respect our traditions, our Maple Leaf Flag, and our history. I did not see any Maple Leaf Flag displayed on the CN Tower outdoor platform.
Perhaps I am showing my advanced age. Maybe the words patriotism and nationalism are not as meaningful as they once were. In 1967, a few of my schoolmates and I actually cried when we sang "O Canada" and the Bobby Gimby song "Can-a-da" during assemblies. Our National Flag was prominently displayed in every classroom. Teachers accompanied us on visits to the Parliament Buildings, Experimental Farm, the Dominion Observatory, and Expo 67 in Montreal. The Dominion Observatory telescope was still functioning during the 1960's. I wore a dress, white gloves, a hat, black patent leather shoes and white socks whenever I attended church.

The denationalization of military properties.

The federal government of Canada devolved 18 Veterans hospitals to the provinces. Other Veterans Affairs properties were privatized.
Ste. Anne's Hospital Montreal - transferred a few years ago to the Province of Quebec.

Montreal.

Pyramids like the Great Pyramid of Giza are rumored to be portals or stargates to another dimension. The astronomer Carl Sagan said there were pyramids on Mars. Mars may have already been colonized. Royalty, musicians, billionaires and politicians may take over distant planets. Ordinary people will mine the resources, and women will be used as reproduction vessels or surrogate mothers.

The hollowing out of the Canada Post Corporation.

A Fraser Institute wish list. Don't worry, Fraser Institute, many of your recommendations have been carried out. The CBC has been de-listed from the Federal Directory of Real Property. Hundreds of Canada Post  buildings are gone, and I suspect that the CP property in Confederation Heights Ottawa is on the hit list.

The CN Tower is non-federal owned.

Canada's National Parks in British Columbia should be transferred to the province- Fraser Institute.

Canadian National Parks in British Columbia:
Yoho National Park
Kootenay National Park
Glacier National Park
Mount Revelstoke National Park
Pacific Rim National Park
Gulf Islands National Park
Gwaii Haanas National Park

The Government of Canada recently announced that $8.3 billion dollars worth of property in the parks will be sold off, including bridges, dams, highways, roads and nature trails. It is time for the United Nations to rescue Crown property from the vultures who are currently profiting from the sale of my land, buildings and infrastructure...Several parks in the Northwest Territories and Alberta are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In a participatory democracy, the people of Canada would be consulted before their land is sold. There would be debates in the House of Commons; polls; referendums. American President Obama used Executive Orders to sell federal property. In Canada, Executive Orders are called Federal Orders-in-Council; Orders-in-Council facilitated the sale of everything from Experimental Farm land in Ottawa to 1,000 acre military bases. I know, I spent years poring over books and documents in libraries and the Dominion Archives.
Because I care. Because I want future generations to have the opportunity to visit our national parks and not see "Private Property" and "No Trespassing" signs. Because I want Canadians to marvel at the architecture of Kingston Penitentiary, and the Chateau Laurier and the thousands of other endangered buildings in this country. Because the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa should never have been decommissioned, and the Gonzales Observatory in Victoria B.C. should never have been sold. As a 14-year-old I gazed at the universe through a Dominion Observatory telescope, and that experience is etched in my mind.

Why does Canada still have a Governor General?
The autocratic Privy Council Orders in Council are approved and signed by the Governor General, who is the Queen's representative in Canada. I thought The Constitution Act of 1982 was Canada's Declaration of Independence. (I was on Parliament Hill in  and saw the Queen sign the Constitution Act of 1982.) Canada was given legal autonomy as a self-governing Dominion. A foreign power or entity should not have the power to sell our:
National Parks
Penitentiaries - New Westminster, BC; Prison for Women, Kingston; Kingston Penitentiary; Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Laval, Quebec.
Museums - Old War Museum, Sussex Drive Ottawa.
Veterans Hospitals - Smyth Road Ottawa; Senneville Lodge in Quebec; George Derby lands, BC.
 Fisheries and Oceans rescue bases.
1,000 lighthouses, the entire portfolio. Even Peggy's Cove was sold off.
Agriculture Canada experimental farms and research stations.

Canada should not be a Dominion.
The word "Dominion" means "territory of a sovereign or government; a colony".

The privatization of Canada's military bases.

CFB Rockcliffe Ottawa, 1983.
My Dad is in front of the Lansdowne Barracks, Ottawa..
The former Windsor Ontario armoury.
At least 14 Canadian military bases; armouries; the Diefenbunkers; the Pinetree Line and Veteran's Hospitals have been privatized.
The Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe should have been transformed into a National Memorial Park or a National Veterans Park. Instead, most of the land will be sold to real estate entities, and a few plaques will commemorate the history of the site. CFB Rockcliffe was sacred ground, in my opinion.
American President Bill Clinton approved the closure of 130 American domestic military bases in 1993; he called the scheme to demilitarize the United States "defence conversion". Major corporations and billionaires profited from this "conversion"---the Walt Disney Corporation and Star Wars creator George Lucas bought land at San Francisco's massive Presidio military base, and Packard Bell converted an army depot in Sacramento, California into a computer assembly factory. The rich and famous can escape to their underground bunkers during times of conflict, or fly to Antarctica. Or maybe they'll create colonies on Mars, courtesy of Elon Musk. There is a reason why certain individuals receive billions of dollars in grants from the American government; the so-called elite (politicians, royalty, corporate barons) will live distant planets, not average citizens.
CFB Rockcliffe - Out of this world street names:
Jupiter Avenue
Via Venus
Mars Avenue
Polaris Avenue
Via Vega - Vega is the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.
Arcturus Crescent - Arcturus is a red giant star in the Northern Hemisphere.
Castor Avenue - Castor is a binary star in the constellation Gemini, approximately 46 light years from Earth.

Similarities between Alcatraz and the Kingston Pen.

One million people visit Alcatraz every year, and the Kingston Pen is a popular tourist venue.

Alcatraz is an American National Historic Landmark. The Pen was a National Historic Site of Canada and a Classified Federal Heritage Building.

In 2008 the Alcatraz penitentiary faced demolition. Kingston Pen faces the removal of eleven buildings.
Alcatraz was built on a huge limestone rock, hence the nickname "The Rock". KP was constructed with limestone, by inmates. Several other buildings in the Village of Portsmouth, Kingston were built by inmates using limestone:
The Prison for Women
Church of the Good Thief
Rockwood Asylum
Isabel McNeill House
Penitentiary Museum
Penitentiary Water Tower
The two prisons were filming locations:
Alcatraz
The Rock - starring Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris.
Escape from Alcatraz - Clint Eastwood
Point Blank - Lee Marvin

Kingston Pen
The last scene of the first Superman movie.
Alias Grace, adapted from a Margaret Atwood novel.
A music video was filmed at The Pen, "Vera Sola-Small Minds" by Danielle Aykroyd  can be viewed on YouTube.

Nicknames
Alcatraz is known as "The Rock" and "Uncle Sam's Devil's Island."
KP is "The Big House" "KP" and "The Pen".

SONGS
Neil Young's "Time Off for Good Behaviour" is about the Pen:
     "My brother went to prison/
       he's in Kingston doin' time/
he got seven years for sellin'
what I've been smokin' all my life."
Gord Downie wrote a song about Millhaven Penitentiary, which is located a few miles down the road. See the YouTube video "38 years old - Escape from Millhaven". Also, the Cajun Ramblers recorded "Misbehavin' in Millhaven".
The Blue Diamonds recording "Live at Collins Bay Penitentiary" is now on YouTube.
"Kingston Chain" by Stevedore Steve.
"Kingston Prison" by James McKenty. See the YouTube video.

 Alcatraz songs:
"Alcatraz" by Leon Russell - 1971.
"89 Days of Alcatraz" by Emm Gryner.
"Alcatraz" by Nazareth.
( When Linda Ronstadt entertained prisoners at a penitentiary in Tennessee, she sang "You're No Good" and "Desperado." )

Political intervention and public pressure saved Alcatraz.
Several individuals and organizations are trying to save the Pen:
Friends of Kingston Penitentiary
Frontenac Heritage Foundation
The Haunted Walk of Kingston
Coalition of Kingston Communities
Dr. Jennifer McKendry, an architectural historian.
Bill Glover, a City Councillor for Sydenham.
Simonne Ferguson, president of the Friends of the Penitentiary Museum.
Kingston Municipal Heritage Committee
ipetitions - Don't Erase History- Protect the Penitentiary.

Members of the public saved the Joyceville and Collins Bay prison farms.

Update - Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario.

1.Centennial College created a satellite campus in the former de Havilland Aircraft Building at 65 Carl Hall Road, Toronto. Canada Lands Company leased the building to the College, and the College has to pay for the restoration of 65 Carl Hall Road including outdoor work areas on the tarmac and surface parking.
2.Ward 9 - North York councillor Maria Augimeri found out through a source that Canada Lands Company has asked city officials to revisit the park's official plan, allowing for 10,000 residential units on the land.
Maria Augimeri:
"They already have permission for 10,000 units, 25,000 new people. How much more does their greed call for?"
The City of Toronto and the Ontario Municipal Board approved the updated Official Plan, which will permit more residential construction.

3. Aviation buildings located at 40 and 60 Carl Hall Road will be deconstructed. Partial deconstruction of 75 Carl Hall Road will be permitted to build a hockey arena.

The Government of Ontario and UNESCO can preserve the Kingston Provincial Campus.

The Ontario Heritage Act designated three landscapes in Kingston, Ontario Heritage Conservation Districts:
Market Square
Barriefield Village
Old Sydenham

"The Ontario Heritage Act"
  • It's purpose: to give municipalities and the provincial government powers to preserve the heritage of Ontario.
  • It's primary focus: to protect heritage properties and archaeological sites.
  • Important provisions: It also mandates a Crown agency-Ontario Heritage Trust- and the Conservation Review Board-a tribunal that hears objections to municipal objections under the Act.
The Old Don Jail in Toronto was slated for demolition, before community groups became involved and saved the prison. Now the Don Jail is open to the public, and the building is a filming location for movies and television programs including "Suits".
The Kingston Provincial Campus is a Cultural Heritage Landscape, because the Rockwood Hospital, Rockwood Villa, gazebo and several other irreplaceable buildings are located on the site. The Ontario government agency that privatizes provincially owned land and buildings is selling the campus.
If the property becomes a UNESCO Cultural Landscape, the entire site that is currently being sold will be untouchable:
UNESCO, A UNITED NATIONS AGENCY
Designated cultural landscape
"-Garden and parkland landscape, often associated with religious or other monumental buildings..."

Rockwood Asylum is a monumental building, in my opinion, built by Kingston Penitentiary inmates; and housed by prisoners who were too mentally unstable to be incarcerated at the Pen. Constructed with limestone, Rockwood will last for thousands of years. The limestone Great Pyramid of Giza is 4,000 years old, and the foundation of the Parthenon in Athens is limestone. Infrastructure Ontario calls empty hospitals and jails "ghost buildings" and they are all endangered, the focus of redevelopment or destruction.
