Office and residential towers should be banned from the Parliamentary Precinct.

And that includes the Sparks Street Mall.
House of Commons Debates     Ottawa     January 29, 1985
Mr. Mike Cassidy (Ottawa Centre-NDP)
"...in the planning of the City of Ottawa, which came after the Greber report, and when the downtown was planned in the early 1960's,specific regard was had in trying to recognize the pre-eminence of the Peace Tower and the House of Commons. We, in our wisdom today, may judge that was wrong, but nonetheless anyone who examines downtown Ottawa will discover that the height limits have the effect of creating a saucer, so that the House of Commons and the Peace Tower remain the pre-eminent buildings in this part of the downtown core."
The Constitution Act of 1867
"The buildings are only allowed to get higher as they get farther away from Wellington Street and the parliamentary precinct. Today that may be seen as naive planning, but it was clearly designed to take account of the fact that Parliament Hill is an important national symbol and should be given that pre-eminence."

Organizations and departments that were located in the Mall:
The Canada Council
The Unitarian Service Committee
National Capital Commission

Crown versus Town - The great divide.
The City of Ottawa should not have the power to alter the zoning near Parliament Hill; give away heritage buildings, for example 755 Somerset West in Chinatown; and permit the construction of 45 storey condos on Carling and Preston---this is the capital city of Canada not Manhattan.
I am so tired of hearing the following words and phrases - intensification; smart growth; sustainable development;the Farm and Dow's Lake will not be impacted by the loss of 50 acres of land and the construction of a hospital and, another park will compensate for the loss of green space.
