A treaty was signed between Great Britain and Canada when the waterway was transferred to the Canadian government.
House of Commons Ottawa June 1, 1950.
George Taylor Fulford (Leeds, Ontario) Liberal.
Mr. Fulford:
"...As we all know, the Rideau canal is of particular historic importance. It was built after the War of 1812 by British army engineers. There was a rather quaint treaty signed between Great Britain and Canada when the canal system was handed over to Canada. One of the clauses said that Canada would maintain the canal system as long as the grass was green and the skies were blue."

My grandparents home was located near Merrickville, Ontario, part of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. The area was founded by the United Empire Loyalists. I spent many years of my life in towns and villages adjacent to the Rideau Canal. I am standing in front of my grandparents home in 1956:
1.) "Parks Canada to look at divesting highways, bridges, dams" (CBC News August 26, 2017.) The Rideau Canal has 53 dams and many bridges.
2.) Google: "May 2018 State of Conservation Report, Rideau Canal" go to "November 14, 2019."
3.) The Trudeau government refused to sell the Chateau to the Hilton Corporation during the 1970's. The Canada Pavilion at Epcot in Orlando, Florida is a replica of the Chateau.
