See "Future of Hog's Back Bridge a hot topic after NCC audit reveals need for repairs" CBC News August 25, 2017; and "Parks Canada to look at divesting highways, bridges and dams." CBC News August 26, 2017. As I said in my previous blog, the Rideau Canal has 53 dams.

Two Rideau Canal bridges in Ottawa are no longer owned by the National Capital Commission:

The governments of Great Britain and Canada signed a treaty stating that Canada would maintain the Rideau Canal in perpetuity: House of Commons  Ottawa   June 1, 1950. Member of Parliament George Taylor Fulford (Leeds, Ontario) Liberal:Mr. Fulford: "...There was a rather quaint treaty signed between Great Britain and Canada when the canal was handed over to Canada. One of the clauses said that Canada would maintain the canal system as long as the grass was green and the skies were blue."
