Similarities between the Federal Penitentiary in New Westminster, B.C. and Kingston prisons.

The Gatehouse, one of the few buildings left standing at the New Westminster Federal Pen in British Columbia.

Most of the buildings at the former Federal Pen in New Westminster are gone, to make way for townhouses. The southern half of Kingston Pen will be leveled, to make way for townhouses and high rise condos.

The B.C. Pen operated a prison farm, before the land was sold to the City of New Westminster. The Government of Canada decommissioned prison farms in the year 2010---apparently the Joyceville and Pittsburgh farmland was worth $2 million dollars. (Read: The October 2007 Report - Strengthening Public Safety-Report of the Correctional Service of Canada Review Panel - Page 208.)  The prison farms are now being reopened, see the documentary "Til the Cows Come Home".

When the BC Pen was decommissioned, there were public tours for a brief time. KP is now a popular tourist venue with guided tours.
