Comments about a real estate project in Alta Vista.

Faircrest Heights Community Association comments - September 16, 1999:

  • There is more concern for the quality of life for future residents than for existing people living in the neighbourhood.
  • Will building on shale effect existing houses. In the past blasting for construction and the use of heavy equipment broke china, etc.
  • The proposal is not in keeping with the existing suburban community.
  • Do not want Alta Vista Drive to become another Smyth Road with a new road connecting to hospital parking.
  • How will the future owners (developers) interpret the Zoning By-law?
  • There needs to be more green space because the area is heavily populated...The park-like areas of the Rideau Veterans' site should be saved and the woods around the creek...Saving the trees is a good idea; the NDMC trees should also be saved. The lilacs on the Rideau Veterans' site are also important...The community sees the parkland issue as a loss of a large parcel of open space in the development site--all owned by the crown.

"The community is stunned and disappointed...The real problem is that when they sold the land they had no design control over the developer." (Peter Hume, Ottawa City Councillor---Ottawa Citizen newspaper article , November 30, 2005.) (The quote appeared on the Upton Farm Community Greenspace blog March 27, 2007.)
The past president of the Faircrest Heights residents association says area residents are "appalled" at the result. (November 30, 2005 Ottawa Citizen newspaper article.)
