Ottawa' s Rideau Canal and adjacent lands will be massively changed.

Parks Canada, the National Capital Commission and the City of Ottawa commissioned a report called "The Animation of the Rideau Canal Project". The NCC has already given the green light to  proposals outlined in the document according to the Ottawa Citizen article "NCC milestone projects for 2067" by Don Butler, July 7, 2016.

A sample of what is in store for the Ottawa portion of the Rideau Canal:
-The authors of "The Animating the Rideau Canal Project" are critical of passive uses of land next to the waterway such as walking, bird watching and reading. They want to jazz it up, turn it into an overcrowded, commercialized, overlit venue similar to canal projects in San Antonio, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts.
-Federal properties that do not advance the redevelopment agenda will be removed.

-Zoning laws will be changed to facilitate the marketing of land adjacent to the waterway.

-Many trees that block the views of the Rideau Canal will be chopped down by Parks Canada.

- "The Animating of the Rideau Canal" document includes the following phrases---removal of heritage designations; design charrette; urban infill and tactical urbanism.
