Parks Canada is abdicating their duty to protect the Rideau Canal.

The town of Smiths Falls Ontario is selling property that should be owned by the people of Canada. According to a marketing brochure, the former water treatment plant is a "prime development opportunity" located next to the Rideau Canal. The town is more than willing to change zoning laws to pave the way for condominiums and commercial establishments.
I was under the impression that Parks Canada was the custodian of the Rideau Canal, they should be enforcing zoning laws and buying up properties like the decommissioned water plant.
The Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and condominiums should be banned from adjacent land.
Parks Canada is the custodian of lands around lockstations, dams and shoreline assets of the Rideau Canal...The Historic Canals Regulations are Parks Canada's primary tool for managing, maintaining and protecting the canals.

Parks Canada plans to chop down many trees abutting the Ottawa portion of the Rideau Canal if the trees block views of the Canal, see the document "Animating the Rideau Canal project".
The federal agency recently cut down 235 trees abutting Montreal's Lachine Canal:
                                        Parks Canada Statement
"In order to carry out this work (rehabilitating the infrastructure) and enhance the experience of visitors to the canal, Parks Canada must remove some vegetation in the area including mature trees. Parks Canada sites must combine environmental protection interests with those of visitor experience." (From: CTV News Montreal - "Trees along Lachine Canal cut for bike path" August 25, 2018.)

The water treatment plant located at 25 Old Mill Road, Smiths Falls Ontario.
