The Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa must be saved.

1.)  The Chateau Laurier Hotel overlooks the Rideau Canal which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Canadian federal government official signed the "Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage" treaty in 1976. World Heritage Sites have buffer zones that protect views of UNESCO properties.

2.)  The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography was located between the Chateau and the Rideau Canal. For years I thought the museum was part of the hotel. The museum was built in 1992.
The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography was indistinguishable from the Chateau Laurier. ( Wikipedia.org. photo.)

3.)  The Chateau is a National Historic Site of Canada and was a Classified Federal Heritage Building.

4.)  There are guidelines pertaining to the architecture of buildings beside the Rideau Canal. According to the document "Rideau Canal National Historic Site - Principles for Good Waterfront Development" owners and designers have to:

  • Conserve historic buildings and cultural features...and
  • New buildings should be designed to complement the landscape, character and architectural style of the surrounding area. Buildings should be in proportion to the size and frontage of the property to fit in with the surroundings of the built environment.
5.)    The City of Ottawa recognized the importance of National Historic Sites in Confederation Square.

6.)  According to Parks Canada, Confederation Square was "Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984 and is considered the second most important ceremonial centre of the national capital after the Parliament Buildings."

7.)  A petition called "Block changes to the Chateau Laurier's classic look" received 4,800 signatures as of July 1, 2019.
